More than 30 years after her high school graduation, Melissa Jenkins graduated from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) with an Associate in Arts degree at SCF Venice’s Grad Walk ceremony in May. She is the first college graduate in her family.

“I cried when I hit the graduation stage because I knew how hard I worked for this,” said Jenkins. “My mother was excited for me to graduate. She unfortunately passed away last September, so this is not only for me, but also for her.”

Jenkins grew up in Sarasota and attended the University of Arizona Global for one year before transferring to SCF in March 2025. She took online courses at SCF Venice while raising her children with her husband and working full time as an assistant team lead in the apparel department at the Goodwill Retail Store & Donation Center – Rialto.

Through the SCF-Goodwill Industries partnership, Jenkins received financial support for her SCF education and became the program’s first graduate. Goodwill Industries covers application, tuition and instructional material expenses for qualified employees to take courses toward an SCF degree.

“This (program) was a big part in me being able to attend college,” Jenkins said. “It has helped me achieve something that I never thought I could. I am now a college graduate, and that is a big accomplishment for me.”

Heather Shehorn, dean, academic success and early college programs at SCF, celebrated Jenkins’ dedication and achievement. “As the dean who was responsible for launching the program, I cannot be prouder of our first SCF-Goodwill Industries graduate. As a nontraditional student balancing work, college and everyday life, Melissa exemplifies the perseverance, sacrifice and determination required to earn a degree.”

Jenkins is now pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Science in Management and Leadership at SCF. She looks forward to earning her second degree from SCF and exploring different career paths, including business ownership.

“Everyone is friendly and willing to help you if you need it, and the campus is beautiful,” said Jenkins. “I am looking to learn new skills in retail management, progress further with Goodwill Industries and maybe get into human resources or social work. I eventually would like to own my own yarn store.”

Outside of classes, Jenkins likes playing computer games, crocheting and playing Dungeons & Dragons with her children. In the future, she would love to travel to Ireland.

From her college experience, Jenkins would encourage other students to try, not give up, ask for help and remember to breathe. She appreciates her family’s support along her journey.

“Going back to school later in life has been a big step for me,” Jenkins said. “I am grateful for my husband for being there for me when I needed guidance, and my kids for allowing me the time to work on my dreams. Hopefully, I can be a role model for my kids.”
