Angel Kelly, office supervisor, library services, SCF

Growing up in Sarasota, Angel Kelly began her higher education journey at Manatee Community College (now State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota) in 1990. While working and raising her son as a single parent, she earned an Associate in Arts degree with a concentration in psychology.

“SCF is highly respected in the community as a top employer and a seamless transfer school to four-year universities,” said Kelly. “The college offered the flexibility I needed to earn my degree and reach my goals.”

Kelly has worked at SCF for nearly three decades. She joined the college in 1998 as a courier/staff assistant II before moving to library services, where she served as a staff assistant III and now as office supervisor. She is also a registered pharmacy technician and works part time at CVS Pharmacy.

In 2012, Kelly continued her education toward a bachelor’s degree at SCF. She excelled academically and enhanced her professional development by participating in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the American Library Association and the Association of Florida Colleges.

Kelly graduated from SCF in 2015 with a 4.0 GPA, recognition as an Outstanding Graduate Award Finalist and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Homeland Security. She received a single parent scholarship award, a Palm-Aire Women’s Club scholarship award and a Florida Association of Community Colleges (now Association of Florida Colleges) scholarship award and has taken classes at the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee.

“Education is the ultimate foundation for a successful life,” Kelly said.

Serving Proudly at SCF

In her role, Kelly supports Library Director Margaret Hawkins and the library staff with daily operations. She manages databases, inventory and budgets for the libraries and the Family Heritage House Museum. She also serves as the building manager and assists with event planning and onboarding.

Kelly values her colleagues and longtime service connecting students with the resources they need to accomplish their educational goals. She especially enjoys the excitement of graduation events.

“SCF has become my second home over the last 27-plus years,” Kelly stated. “I’ve worked with some amazing people working toward the same goal of helping our students succeed. Each graduation is uniquely special, watching students and their families celebrate and knowing that each of us did a little part in making it happen. It truly does take a village.”

Honoring Excellence at SCF

The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development recognized Kelly as one of six SCF faculty and staff members to receive a 2026 Excellence Award. Colleagues nominated the recipients based on their outstanding commitment, talent, teaching and service.

Kelly said her greatest personal achievement is raising son while balancing work and college as a single parent. She also draws inspiration from her brother, whom she describes as an exceptional human being.

“He consistently finds the good in others,” Kelly said. “He overcame significant childhood hurdles with immense grace and exceeding everyone’s expectations. His resilience makes me an incredibly proud sister.”

Life Outside of SCF

Outside of work, Kelly enjoys playing board games, watching movies and taking day trips with her family. Her favorite place to go is Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

“It is a piece of heaven on Earth,” said Kelly. “The Gregg-Cable House is an 1879 historic frame house built by my ancestors, along the 11-mile loop and surrounded by untouched natural beauty. I try to visit there as often as possible.”
