Aiming Higher in Business and Entrepreneurial Teaching

Tylisha Johnson, D.B.A., Manager of the Entrepreneurship Program and Assistant Professor, Business, SCF.

Tylisha Johnson often says she was born to be a teacher. Growing up in Dover, Delaware, she began role-playing education scenarios with her toy dolls and teddy bears at age five.

“Teaching is my purpose and passion,” said Johnson.

Johnson started her academic career in the SCF business department in 2021. She began as an adjunct professor, was promoted to a lecturer, and rose to an assistant professor of business at SCF Venice and SCF Bradenton. She values lifelong learning and higher education teaching, drawing inspiration from Martin Luther King, Jr., who wrote, “Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education,” in a Morehouse College Maroon Tiger campus newspaper article.

“As an educator, I have a responsibility to make a meaningful difference in my students’ lives and motivate them to pursue their purpose and destiny,” Johnson said. “If I can enhance a student’s knowledge and help build their character, I will have fulfilled the goal of ‘true education.’”

Johnson earned a doctorate in business administration from Wilmington University and a master’s degree in business administration and a bachelor’s degree in business education from Delaware State University. She also holds a life coaching certification and the Association of College and University Educators’ Effective Teaching Practice Framework certification. Her work experience includes customer service and administrative and instructional roles at businesses, middle schools, high schools and colleges. She has taught computer literacy, mathematics, vocation, college preparatory, business and entrepreneurship courses.

At SCF, Johnson is the manager of the entrepreneurship program, an advisor of the award-winning Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Collegiate Club Venice chapter, a two-time student-selected Outstanding Faculty Award nominee, and a visionary leader of the Business Speaker Series, which connects local business executives and entrepreneurial leaders with SCF students.

Johnson appreciates SCF’s supportive faculty, staff and learning environment. She encourages students to participate in the full college experience, including student life activities that can lead to academic, social and personal growth.

“SCF has fostered a community dedicated to providing exceptional customer service to all,” she said. “It is a true privilege and pleasure to be a part of my students’ journeys.”

Outside of work, Johnson volunteers with youth groups and underserved populations, serves in her ministry and visits the beach – her happy place and reason for moving to Florida. She thrives by supporting others, demonstrating love and kindness, and helping to make positive changes for students.

“I am honored to educate and empower students to strive for excellence, pursue their dreams, and aspire higher in all aspects of their lives,” Johnson said.
